COVID-19 Vaccination: Risk for the Greater Good
"The more afraid you are, the more the world gets scarier. If we don't stop being afraid, when will this pandemic stop?"
With the rollout of vaccines against COVID-19, an optimistic and a negative attitude among people have arisen. Surprisingly, surveys among people reveal that there is a significant rate of distrust against the vaccines. This shows that one of the biggest hurdles in solving this problem will be convincing the Filipino people that vaccines are one of the most feasible and strategic solution to solve this global health crisis. Our current situation is a survival in a war where enemy is unseen. The combined absence of cooperation and presence of ignorance among people can worsen the ongoing condition. There is a strong consensus globally that a COVID-19 vaccine is likely the most effective approach to sustainably controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. (Koirala, Jin Joo, Khatami, Chiu, and Britton). COVID-19 vaccines were developed to be an effective and solution to combat the said virus. It was not developed to scare and create doubts.
The hesitancy and distrust is perhaps caused by corruption, discrimination, systemic marginalization, past issues, and incompetence of the government — which are still being experienced by the Filipino people up to this days. It cannot be denied that the Dengvaxia controversy contributed to Filipinos' distrust over COVID-19 vaccines. This issue haunts and casts shadows over the vaccine roll-out. Let it be a reminder that safety and health is priority, and there are many reasons outweighing doubts to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The virtue of cooperation is a valid antidote to lighten the burden of negative effects brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. ( Cordero Jr., 2021). COVID-19 vaccines will not succeed on combatting the virus if we will not trust it. To defeat a war, all must cooperate and create harmony in unity. Be reminded that people who have been fully vaccinated can start to do some things that they had stopped doing because of the pandemic. The challenge for all of us is to beat the virus, the best you can do is to be part of the solution not the problem.
The more citizens delaying themselves to be vaccinated, the more impact this could have on health, rising hunger, unemployment, and economic recession. The more afraid you are, the more the world gets scarier. If we don't stop being afraid, when will this pandemic stop?
