KANNAWIDAN A FEAST OF RICH HERITAGE

It is true that Vigan holds the most significant history the Philippines could offer. Spanish culture is highly-preserved, anncestral structures are the best evidences for this living Spanish Culture. Vigan City proves that although, man had worked for centuries to rebuild the city, its beauty withstand the values it holds.
Kannawidan Festival is the grandest celebration that our City could offer. Every Ilocano looks forward to the Kannawidan Festival because it is a grand celebration of our culture. It is a time where every municipality comes together as one to thank God not only for our bountiful harvests but also to celebrate our successes and gains as a province. This ocassion provides entertainment, joy, and pride to the people, not only for the Biguenos but for the entire Ilocos Sur. That is why every district may have their own booths in representation of their one town one product. Not only that, artists, musicians, bands, comedians are invited to perform during the night and it cannot be denied that these people gives life to the celebration aside from the growing numbers of people supporting this feast.
Why do we celebrate Kannawidan Festival?
They call it the KANNAWIDAN Ylocos Festival, it is also a time to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province since it was separated on February 3, 1818. Kannawidan is a variant of the Ilocano word "tawid" meaning heritage or inheritance.
Kannawidan has its beginnings in 1992 when Guia Monroy Valenciano, then vice-president of PCI Bank, began sounding out to friends about establishing a museum. Her son Al, an artist, and the late Perlita Alviar-Foz, who once served as a curator of the Ayala Museumin Vigan, encouraged her. The idea caught on fast. Among the instant converts were: Ogie Balmaceda Alviar and Alice Raval Ventura, the wife of then city mayor Cesar Ventura. Together with Guia and Al, they called on Francis Ablan, then Caltex Phils. President.
With the power of hands, empowered by the creativity of minds, indeed, Kannawidan Festival is the most awaited celebration of our province every year.
Usually, every Kanawidam Festival, from the very start of it until the very end, one can see crowd full of enjoyment, pride, laughter, and amazememt. One can witness people's amazement when they see rare sizes or types of foods. Booths can be seen lined up in columns or rows showcasing different cultures of every mumicpality.
However, COVID 19 forbidden us to celebrate Kanawidan Ylocos Festival the usual way. Everyone are advised to stay at home and avoud getting out this pandemic. Infection control and social distancing is crucial to prevent the spread of the virus.
It is best to preserved our culture. Despite the advancement of technology and modernity, culture should be passed from a generation to another generation. Kannawidan Festival is the best way to show how determined are Biguenos in terms of loving their culture. But in this time of pandemic, health should be our priority. We need to follow protocols and policies to manage the spread of Corona Virus.
Celebrating while disobeying rules during pandemic can set a higher possibility of waking up with with a sudden surge of cases in our province or waking up with symptoms.
